To address its student housing crunch, the Famu Board of Trustees will consider awarding three contracts to two different Construction companies to build three new residential halls.

However one of the construction companies FAMU is considering award two of the construction contracts to is Tallahassee-based Culpepper Construction Company, co-owned by Sam Childers who Florida State University severed ties with, less than 3-years ago, after photos surfaced of him appearing in blackface.

The FAMU Board will consider at its April 19th meeting awarding Childers' company contracts worth more than $158 million to construct a new Gibbs Hall (500 bed) and a new Palmetto North (800 beds).

Childers’ photos were brought to light by FSU grad Sarah Howard who found them on Facebook and felt there was something inappropriate about them.

“My primary goal was to implore Florida State to consider condemning this behavior, which was in violation of their equal opportunity and nondiscrimination statements, and to consider cutting future ties with Childers Construction,” she said. “It showed a lack of respect and a general callousness for his employees and employers.
