FAMU is among a growing number of U.S. colleges putting in place efforts to limit students from participating in large potentially deadly off-campus gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the tools the university has implemented is a Curfew for students residing in university residence halls which went into effect at 12 a.m. this morning (Saturday).
The curfew mandates that students be in their assigned dorms from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on all weekdays (Monday-Thursday) and from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. on the weekends (Friday-Sunday).
“This curfew will go into effect Aug. 22 at 12 a.m. and continue until further notice. In the event of extenuating circumstances, students must alert their respective residence hall director immediately if they need to leave during curfew,” said Dean of Student Bomani Spell.
“This curfew is to prevent large gatherings/parties on campus or in the Tallahassee community and not to restrict students’ movement,” he said.
Failure to adhere to FAMU’s COVID-19 Conduct Enforcement Procedures will subject offenders to sanctions from the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.
Sanctions will include immediate suspension from university housing, as well as the possibility of disciplinary probation, suspension and/or expulsion from school.
Spell said the FAMU community is “extremely concerned by the national trend of students not adhering to mask/social distancing policies enacted by their respective institutions and local government mandates, including here at FAMU.”
