How to Make a Completely Insulated House?

Insulating your House is one of the most important aspects to focus on, while working on the construction plan. Presently, almost all the houses in Australia, are weatherproofed for a comfortable environment all year around. However, even after insulation, many houses do not end up achieving the right kind of temperature.

The reason behind that, can be the poor installation of the material, or incomplete insulation. A perfectly insulated house needs to be covered from all the areas that are directly connected to the outer perimeter. Including the attic, outer walls, basement or crawl area, windows and doors etc.

Here is the list of the most important parts of your house that need to be insulated, and their installation tips.

The Attic, Roofs and Ceilings

Attic or the roofs are the parts of the house that suffer the most in all weathers, with the direct sunrays, in summer, and freezing snow, in winter. The ceilings and the roofs, can make your house lose up to 45 percent of heating and cooling energy. Hence, the most important place to be insulated.

Installation Tips
  1. If you are insulating your old house, you need to seal all the air leaks and repair the roof and other necessary areas, before you start insulating the attic.
  2. The doors, windows or any other access to the attic are also need to be air sealed and insulated, along with the other parts.
  3. Both, Loose-fill and batt, can be good options for the attic insulation. However, loose-fill would be more affordable and provide a better coverage if installed properly.

Loose-fill: Predominantly consist of small particles of cellulose and fiberglass, the loose-fill insulation install, either by being blown into the attic and cavities of finish walls, or sprayed onto these places, with water based adhesive.

Batt and Rolls: Generally, made of fiberglass, rock, wool, and cottons’ flexible fiber bind and cut into form of batt and rolls. The fiberglass insulation is one of the most popular types of batt or rolls insulation. This insulation install by placing the rolls across an unfinished attic floor, and on the spacing of wall suds.

Basements and Crawl Spaces

A proper insulation of the basement is essential, for saving money on heating/cooling as well as keeping a comfortable and warm living space. The insulation on the exterior walls of the basement minimizes the thermal bridging and heat loss through the foundation.

The other benefits of basement and crawl space insulation are:

  • It protects the damp-proof coating from getting damaged by backfilling
  • Protects the house from moisture intrusion
  • Reduces the interior temperature swing
  • Reduces the possible condensation on the surfaces and ceilings of the basement
Installation Tips
  1. To enhance the effectiveness of the basement or crawl space insulation, in an unfinished house, install it at the space between the foundation and the frame of the house. Also, caulk around the window frames in the basement.
  2. It is important to insulate the bare slab floors, that are directly built on the floor above the crawl space and the foundation wall.
  3. Seal and insulate the ductwork, plumbing, and the flues. Also, seal any hole or space which air can penetrate through, and rise up to the living area.

Exterior Walls

Insulation of the exterior walls can make your house more energy efficient, and and can help save upto 20% of heating and cooling energy. Usually, walls’ insulation is done while the construction of a new house, or in case of major renovation. Either way, you can take advantage of insulating the exterior walls, according to the existing codes/norms or even going beyond those.

To insulate the exterior walls of an old house, you can use the spaces between the exterior walls and the frames of the house.

Consider foam sheathing rather than going for wood sheathing products, as they have higher R-values and offer a continuous layer of insulation.

Installation Tips
  1. For exterior walls, dense pack technique is most preferable method for a significant air sealing, and can be installed without much of the disturbance to the other finished part of the house.
  2. Newly constructed houses have many options of building material that automatically reduce the need of insulation. For example, structural insulated panels, insulating concrete forms, and insulated concrete blocks, all of these material have built in insulation.
  3. While you insulate the exterior walls, remember to confirm with the electrician that the wiring within the walls can be properly insulated, without being damaged. Also, make sure that the quality of the insulation is not being compromised.

Windows and Doors

Windows and doors, are the usual suspects that contribute towards bringing down the efficiency (temperature) of the house by letting air penetrate into the house through large gaps between their frames and the walls around them. A good caulk, foam spray, and weather strriping around the frame is sufficient, in case of minor small gaps.

Installation Tips
  1. Seal all the cracks or holes that allows the air to come inside the house
  2. Use the shrink-wrap film over the drafty windows, for insulation
  3. Install pelmets on the top of the windows. (Pelmets are the boxes that cover the curtain rods and butt up against the back of the curtain.)
  4. To stop the air entering through the bottom of the doors, you can use the sweeps. You can find two kinds of sweeps in the market, one with the adhesive that sticks on the door, and the other one can be install by nailing on the door. Both of the sweeps work perfect on the uneven floor.

Why you should Insulate your Houses in Australia

Insulation does not only help you keep your house warm, in winters, but also comes with many other perks, including, energy saving, money saving etc.

Here are some reasons that convenance you to insulate your house.

Improved Thermal Comfort

Insulation is the best cure for the winter’s freezing and summer’s burning atmosphere in the house. It helps the house to maintain a balanced thermal energy to keep you warm and comfortable, all year around, by preventing the cold/hot air to enter the house.

Less Noise, More Peace

Having a peaceful evening without any noise, from outside the house, can be little hard. Especially, when you are living in the middle of the city, it becomes essential to soundproof your house. And, in such cases, insulation can be a savior. Insulation is a great sound absorber and protect the house by reducing the sound transmission through the walls, ceiling and floors of the house.

A Budget Friendly Solution for Comfort

A well insulated house can reduce the power consumption on heating and cooling, up to 40%. Especially, the insulated ceilings can help you save up to 20% – 30% of your heating/cooling bills. By stopping the external cold/hot air, to ruin your home’s warmth and comfort, without using any extra efforts of the electric equipments.

Let’s Protect the Environment, by Not Ruining it

Why to go for CFC emitting appliances and increase the greenhouse effects on earth, when we have many natural solution to stay warm or cold, whenever we want?

Insulated houses can play a great role towards protecting the environment by helping to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, and the pollution increasing because of them.

No More Condensation Inside the House

Condensation occurs at the roof/ceiling of the houses, when the inside temperature is below or at the dew-point of the air. Insulation increases the inside temperature above the dew-point and doesn’t let the condensation to occur.

Requirements for Insulation

Just before you start or plan the insulation for your new/old house, there are a few things that you need to consider:

  • Check the Australian standards and Building Codes of Australia and ensure that the insulation meets the minimum requirements for the R-Value and the appropriate clearance are met around the electric wires and other appliances. (*R-Value is the ability to prevent heat leaking in or out of any building.)
  • Installer needs to make sure that all the state and territory laws are being comply, while the process of insulation. For example, there are a few states in Australia (south Australia), where the builders need the licence to install the insulation.

While you are weatherproofing your home, find the other building and construction material that might help you fulfill your job.
