A group of anonymous donors have ponied up money to add a layer of Protection for Shelby’s four-legged officers.

Shelby Police Department K-9s now have ballistic tactical vests (also known as bulletproof vests) to wear when they are on the front lines with their human counterparts.

“These were bought in honor of Tim (Brackeen) by people who wanted to give something back,” Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford said.

When Brackeen, a 10-year veteran of the department’s K-9 team, died on Sept. 12, 2016, from injuries sustained while serving warrants, the department felt an outpouring of sympathy from the community. Read more
