- Stay off the highways. Enjoy the Scenic Byways.

- Get your favorite music ready. Doesn’t matter what you play as long as it makes you happy.

- Healthy snacks – You don’t want this to be your last road trip.
- Hint: Don’t get a bunch of the same stuff by getting bulk any anything (except water). Trail mix is awesome the first two days and then it loses its appeal.
- If you are going to have sandwiches – do not prepare ahead of time. Place small containers with the sandwich filling and then build your sandwich when you are hungry. Cold wet sandwiches are not fun. PB&J your steering will get sticky, tuna will get soggy and a mayo sandwich can get warm.
- Maps – technology is great but bring a map along just in case.
- Phone is only for emergencies. Batteries die get a phone battery charger.
- Get your car a professional check-up including tire pressure, check spare tire condition and check oil.
- Fill up a spare gas can and keep it in your trunk.
- Pack automobile emergency kit.
- Pack a small pop-up tent and compressible sleeping bag.
- Install Roadside America App or go to Roadside America to manually plot things on your map. Wish someone would develop an android app for these guys.
- Get a crappy working flip phone, charge it, turn it off and leave it in glove compartment or trunk. You do not need to have a wireless service provider to make emergency calls.
