SPLENDID WEDDING

Top Wedding Photography on the Phone

Ten years ago we could say with confidence that Professional videos results were only achieved with professional level equipment. Now, we see films shot on mobile phones (Olive: the movie, Tangerine) gaining recognition at the Sundance film festival.  But while the technology is available, there are still limiting factors. The successful films make it all look easier than it is.

Films are choreographed. If you take some random footage and show it to anybody they will tell you that is not a film, that is not even part of a film. Even a primary school child knows there is something wrong with such a scene. Our brains expect framing and composition, lighting and colour. Smartphone actually do some of these things automatically, but you still need a human operator to make the right decisions. For a film that suffers many of these fault, search for Rollargator on YouTube.

Films have the benefit of forethought. People are directed, follow a script and know what to expect from other participants. Documentaries and Wedding films don’t have that luxury. When filming a wedding you have to capture the action as it unfolds; there are rarely second chances. There will be a ceremony and an outline of the day, but any professional wedding photographer must know how to capture it all and make it look slick and glossy.

Mobile phones may or may not replace a lot of amateur film equipment. It may or may not replace professional equipment in the future. But while phones do include automated functions and is robotic camera equipment available we will never replace the operator.  As long as we need an operator and editor there will continue to be a professional market for wedding films and the professional wedding photographer.
