Activated Alumina Balls: Highly Effective In Defluorination

What are Activated Alumina Balls?

Just like Silica Gel, Activated Alumina is a commonly used desiccant. Activated Alumina is preferred mainly due to its excellent absorption qualities and large surface area. In the market, Activated Alumina is available in bead, balls and granular form. The main characteristic of Activated Alumina Balls, which make it a highly popular adsorbent, is that it is insoluble in water. The desiccant, however, can easily dissolve in strong acids and alkalies. Thus, it becomes the ideal desiccant to absorb toxins and other dangerous substances from water meant for drinking and household purposes. The main use of Activated Alumina balls is in defluorination of drinking water.


Activated Alumina for Drinking Water Defluorination

It is very important that the water meant for drinking and other household purposes must be cleared of all dirt and contaminants before it is sent for public uses. Municipal corporations all over the world make use of Activated Alumina balls on a large scale to keep drinking water safe and pure. These balls come in handy while removing strong fluoride elements present in the water. The unique features of Activated Alumina balls like its white round porous surface, uniform size, smooth surface, excellent mechanical strength and high absorption rate are what make it the ideal desiccant for defluorination of drinking water. And as mentioned earlier, its insoluble properties also prove helpful in removing fluoride particles.

When the Activated Alumina balls are placed inside the water meant to be purified, it will attract the fluoride molecules. When the pH values and alkaline levels of the raw water is low, more fluoride molecules are taken in by the Activated Alumina balls. A major benefit of Activated Alumina water treatment is that as the number of micro holes of the balls is more, it can absorb more fluoride molecules over a larger area.

In cities, water brought in by municipal corporations contains 2 ppm (parts per million) fluoride levels. When the water is filtered using Activated Alumina balls, the fluoride levels are reduced to below .1ppm. Thus, Activated Alumina removes nearly 99% of the toxic fluoride molecules from water for drinking/household use.
