Do you know your Port?

This is particularly for Entrepreneurs who deal with exports and imports. It is easy to imagine that entrepreneurs who import and export commodities are well conversant with the processes that take place at the Port. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some entrepreneurs incur very unnecessary costs in their businesses due to ignorance of the basic procedures of importing and exporting their goods.

A very large part of Africa is served by two main ports, located in Mombasa, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Mombasa port is a gateway to the northern corridor while the Dar es Salaam port is a gateway to the Dar corridor and Central corridor.
Entrepreneurs in East Africa should understand the cost of operating from either of the corridors to maximize their profits.

They should also know the relevant stakeholders involved in the port transactions, such as the government agents, clearing and forwarding agents, transporters and other cargo handlers without whom their commodities cannot be cleared or transported to and from the port. Ensuring that all documents are in order does not only save time for the entrepreneur, but it also ensures faster processes, thus reducing the cost of business and guaranteeing better service to customers.
