Review Your Estate Plan After a Divorce to Avoid Surprises

If you become divorced and have minor children your ex-spouse may end up with substantial control over your wealth through the children’s conservatorship.  Your Estate plan may also fail to protect yourself and your beneficiaries, as is often the case, if an adult child should become divorced, his or her ex-spouse may end up with part of your estate.

A divorce does not automatically terminate your ex-spouse’s beneficiary designation on your life insurance policy.  A specific change of beneficiary designation MUST be executed, but is often overlooked in divorce proceedings.

Be sure to use a qualified Estate Planning and Asset Protection attorney who specializes in these areas to review your estate should you find yourself or an adult child going through a divorce.
