The New Era of Web Design

As time continues to move forward and technology continues to change and grow, we as designers find ourselves having to stay on top of all of these trends on a day to day basis. The web is always changing and new elements are always emerging. After responsive design was introduced in the mid 2000’s, designers had to come up with new and innovative ways of fitting all content onto a smaller screen. We always hear the saying: “Less is more”, and in reality; less really is more. And so forth Modern Web Design started to take effect. Designers saw the importance of doing clean and modern design and as a result, started to incorporate it into the world of web as well. The truth of the matter is that clean design improves usability and user experience. In an article by Bogdan Sandu titled “Web Design is Changing – Examples of Modern Websites” some words really stood out to me:

“To design and code you don’t need skills, you just have to read a few tutorials, but to build modern sites that are beautiful and useful at the same time, you need to be more than a simple designer”.

Large & Responsive Hero images capture the user’s eye as soon as they arrive to your website; so think of it as being your website’s first impression.

Video backgrounds are starting to be used more as video in social media and everywhere else continues to grow. It is starting to be more appealing for users to view a quick video rather than having to read paragraphs of text and so forth.

Flat design has evolved and not only has it made design in general clean and modern, but it also has helped with load time on websites making those websites who practice this load faster.

Hamburger menus have given us the ability to condense the menu links into a hidden section that is only visible when clicked on. Giving us the ability to continue to add more and more links if needed.

And lastly, giant product images have helped designers to showcase the product in a more efficient way and thus being able to display different angles or different visual features of an item. This is definitely helpful when designing an e-commerce website. It has evolved online shopping as we know it by giving the buyer the satisfaction of seeing a product in a large view without physically having the product itself in front of them.

All in all, Modern Design has been the way to go recently. As new websites are being designed and built we start to notice that a lot of these features and practices are being implemented. And what happens next after this we really don’t know. Like I said, technology and ideas continue to change and grow every day. So for the time being let’s enjoy the practices of our present time.
