3 Myths About Divorce TV and Movies Created

How many times have you seen a TV show or movie featuring a divorced couple? Divorce is now a fairly normal occurrence, so it makes sense that it would be portrayed in popular culture.

However, TV and movies have created myths about divorce which can actually be quite harmful. Read on to learn why these illusions frequently don’t represent reality.

Divorces Are Always Messy

The 1979 film Kramer vs. Kramer told the story of an incredibly acrimonious divorce between characters played by Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman. What makes the situation even more difficult is that the couple has a five year old son.

Unfortunately for many couples, divorce can be a heartbreaking, difficult affair. Spouses can turn against each other, and they can cause rifts in relationships between children and parents. However, Kramer vs. Kramer only portrays one type of divorce. It’s possible for the process to be amicable and stress-free.

Divorces Are Painless

In contrast to Kramer vs. Kramer, modern depictions of divorce celebrate the end of a marriage. The reality TV show series “The Real Housewives” make divorce seem as though it’s an empowering experience for women, from which they emerge stronger and more attractive.

This perspective on divorce is idealized. It doesn’t take into account that the act of ending a marriage is an emotionally difficult time (no matter how smoothly the process goes).

Ex-Spouses Always Have a Romantic Rendezvous

If there’s a divorced couple on a TV show or in a movie, it’s quite likely that the former pair will have some kind of amorous encounter at some point. The tryst reignites hopes (within the audience, at least) that the exes will reunite.

Out of all the myths mentioned here, this one is the most damaging. There’s a reason couples split up – it’s because they aren’t compatible. Don’t expect your ex to come back to you for even one night. Your relationship has ended – you both need to move on.
