Domestic violence has no place in any relationship, no matter what the circumstance. For those experiencing any form of abuse, the best and most immediate solution is distance. Get away from the abusive partner ASAP. Sadly, not everyone can get out of this kind of situation so easily. Most victims of abuse don’t know where to go for help. They don’t even know that help is available in the first place.

Fortunately, Texas does have statewide services and advocacies that can help those experiencing domestic abuse. Seek help if you are abused or you know someone who is.  Here are some of the agencies and offices that will surely help you. Remember, help is available and accessible.

The National Domestic Abuse Hotline

One of the first ways you can seek help if you are experiencing abuse is by contacting the National Domestic Abuse Hotline. This is a 24-hour hotline that operates seven days a week. You can call for immediate assistance or support in dealing with your current situation. This service is confidential and free-of-charge as well, so there’s no need to hesitate should the need to call arise.

Texas Council on Family Violence

The Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) is a nonprofit coalition that focuses on supporting victims of domestic violence. They offer a number of services and resources for those coming from abusive relationships. Some of the services offered include free legal assistance, counseling, and support, as well as shelter for those who may need it after leaving their abusive relationship. For those who have left their abusive spouses and are looking for help or a place to stay, the TCFV can offer you the help and assistance that you need to recover and start again.

Texas Health and Human Services – Family Violence Program

The state of Texas also offers a number of services for victims of domestic violence that are in need of assistance. One of those services includes temporary shelters for those who are in need of a place to stay in where they are safe and away from their abusive partner. These state-funded shelters are found in a number of cities all over Texas and their contact numbers are listed on this site. Should you be unable to find one near you, you can also still contact the National Domestic Abuse Hotline for assistance.

Aside from shelters, the department can also help you seek services such as legal assistance, help in seeking medical care, emergency transportation, and assistance in seeking employment among several others. All of which are free-of-charge.

Texas Advocacy Project

The Texas Advocacy Projects’ main focus is the empowerment of victims of domestic violence. One way they choose to help in their empowerment would be to offer free legal services to victims of abuse. This organization can help you through the process of filing a case against your spouse. as well as an attorney that can represent you and guide you through the entire legal process.
