Baby Boom or Divorces in Wake of Coronavirus?

If there’s one thing everyone in lockdown during this Pandemic has in common, it’s time. Time to spend at home with our families and even more time to spend with romantic partners. With the onslaught of coronavirus, it brings with it a high risk of divorces or of a baby boom.

The imminent danger that the virus brings currently has no plans of disappearing anytime soon, and it is accelerating the rate at which relationships are at. In addition to that, the pandemic is an emotionally stressful time for everyone and we all have different ways of coping with it.

For instance, a Couple who has no plans of conceiving for another year or so may be surprised by an unplanned pregnancy due to more time being spent together. Another example is a couple who had no time to discuss their differences before, but now they have all the time in the world to do so and it might lead to breaking up or divorce.

Will there be a Baby Boom?

History tells us that crises often cause heightened emotional states, which may or may not lead to conception of babies. It happened before after the wars were over and the birth rates soared. The increase in time together matched with fear for life and stress mostly caused those babies.

However, it may also go in the other direction and drop. The unease caused by the pandemic may urge couples to be more careful intimately because of financial and basic needs. Still, there’s no harm in using protection!

Are Divorce Rates going to spike?

If the first thing couples do after the lockdown is lifted is to file a petition for divorce, chances are that the pandemic greatly widened the cracks already in their rocky relationship. Having to spend all their time together can speed up the process that breakups usually take and does exactly that. Not only does it expose the cracks, but the pandemic puts a spotlight on it.

The differences and issues that couples have long been trying to ignore will rise to the forefront of their relationship. They can no longer put it aside. All this takes is time, and right now, time is all they have. It will come as no surprise if divorce rates spike once the lockdown is lifted.

However, there’s also a possibility that it will go the other way. Having more time together means that a couple can work through their differences better. This is without the outside factors that influence their relationship.

This pandemic not only disrupts everyday life because it can also make or break a relationship. The same is true whether it is a romantic or familial relationship. In any case, this is the best time to patch up the cracks in your relationships and ignite the fire that was once there, while also keeping yourself safe indoors.
