Learn to sing

Hi all

So I was asked by the studios to write a blog on how cool it is working there and honestly its something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. There are so many beautiful rewarding moments when Vocal coaching and I feel fortunate to be working in such a caring environment with such excellent passionate musicians.

I was up early today to teach one of my regular Singing clients at 10am. Me and B have worked together for a good few months now and it’s cool to see her come out of her shell. We did a lot of work on accuracy in the beginning. Tightening up her pitch and learning how to map the vocal line using vibrations. A lot of the basic vocal coaching technique stuff is out of the way and now she’s starting to stretch her register above me!!! Yeah girl take those chances!!! So blown away by how hard she’s worked and the changes that have taken place. There’s just a moment, you know? That turning point when procrastination becomes determination and when that flips everything becomes possible! B has started flying and that makes me fly.

So after B I had a new girl. Teenager really nice tone just needs a bit more guts under there. Some work on belt Voice. I try to be really chilled on the first meeting. Singing lessons and voice coaching sessions can be quite stressful for the client if they are naturally shy. Just a quick assessment and our first lesson in breath and basic singing anatomy. I love first lessons. Human beings are amazing machines, amazing instruments. The trick is to learn how to get the best out of our instrument. When I see that penny drop with a client, that anything is possible with enough self mastery, this cool vocal life journey opens up.

Soul Shake is the Choir I started at GMS a couple of years back. Some really lovely people and really lovely voices. We are preparing for a performance at L’s wedding. Me and my mum rewrote “you are my sunshine” to give it a more positive slant the original lyrics were a bit on the heavy side for a wedding, anyway L loves it!!  Its a go. The choir sounds glorius singing it too. Some other fun planned for the wedding also but I’m sure L will want me to keep it under my hat.

When I think about how much rehearsal goes into  performances.. gone in 30 mins… Looking forward to performing at the Merchant City Festival again this year. Just received confirmation over the lunch we always share after choir round the corner at Rose & Grants.

Lu’s advice for the week. We spend so much of our time being serious. Trying to be perfect. Perfection is boring. Play with your voice have fun with it. Instead of being on your phone, listen to the sounds around you. see if you can sing the notes that bird is singing or the harmonics that car just made. It’s one of my favourite meditations. Two ears one mouth so train them as much as your voice. Be a big kid or a wee one. Make silly noises, learn mongolian throat singing badly on youtube, whatever, the point is to experiment with this cool gift you have, whether you know it or not and to have a laugh making lots of great noise.
