High-Stakes Assessments in Education

In K-12 education, high-stakes assessments are commonly used instruments for measuring Student achievement and providing accountability. They help answer questions like: Are students learning what they should be learning? Are students being taught effectively?

High-stakes assessments are scored. The results provide information about an individual student’s performance as well as the performance of groups of students, such as specific grade levels, schools or even states, which can be used to make comparisons.

Direct and Indirect Consequences

One example of a high-stakes assessment with direct consequences for the test taker is a high school graduation test. If a student earns a passing score on their high school graduation test, then they can graduate from high school. But if they don’t, then they’re not allowed to graduate. High-stakes assessments don’t always have consequences for the test taker though. Sometimes the stakes rest with others. One example is the accountability tests that are commonly used in K-12 education, for which the consequences can vary. Depending on the specific test, jurisdiction, student scores or other factors, the results might be higher salaries for teachers, awards or other public recognition, sanctions, dismissals, reduced funding and/or other consequences.

High-Stakes Testing Today

Millions of students take high-stakes assessments in the US every year. High-stakes assessments are regularly offered in subjects like English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science, and at all grade levels. These tests provide a regular snapshot of student achievement. To include all students, some assessments are translated or adapted into languages other than English.
