Bed Sores Leading to E. Coli Infection in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

Bed sores, a leading cause of neglect at nursing homes and Assisted Living Facilities, may lead to other complications such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection if not taken care of promptly.

Symptoms of E. Coli Infection

If at-risk elderly patients are neglected and develop bed sores that aren’t treated properly, they have a greater risk of contracting an E. Coli Infection through the sores. Symptoms of E. Coli infection include:

  • Dehydration
  • Sepsis
  • Pain
  • Gastrointestinal complications
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Bladder infections
  • Fever

When combined with a severe Stage IV Bed Sore injury, an E. Coli infection can turn fatal.

Skilled Nursing Home facilities must then adhere to their written infection policy and procedures to prevent this dangerous complication from occurring.

E. Coli Infections in Long-Term Care

Bed Sores and E. coli infections usually occur when nursing staff neglect to provide patients with proper hygiene and high-quality care.

As E. Coli infections continue to appear in negligent long-term care facilities, proper hygiene, cleanliness, and efficient medical care are the best defense in preventing infection.

When nursing staff does not learn the right prevention policies for their elderly residents, more residents will suffer from chronic conditions while under their care.

Treatments for E. Coli in Bed Sore Injuries

If an at-risk patient suffering from bed sores develops an E. Coli infection, IV fluid treatments or other surgical procedures may be required.

Keeping an at-risk patient hydrated with proper fluids and rest may assist with initial recovery. However, most elderly patients that suffer from E. Coli require more care due to weakened immune systems.

If the infection turns severe, a patient may need to be hospitalized.

Is E. Coli Preventable?

While E. Coli may be highly contagious, it certainly can be prevented through proper hygiene practices.
