New California state regulations were put in place regarding Nursing home facilities in 2018. A wave of nursing homes, nearly half of those in the state, have requested an exemption from these new rules. The new regulations went into effect in July of 2018. These new regulations require nursing home staff to spend more time actively caring for their residents. Having better staffing rules would help nursing homes prevent many injuries to their residents, including helping to reduce the number of falls that residents in nursing homes suffer each year.

Injuries Due to Falls in Nursing Homes

While falling is a common cause of injury to elderly individuals, it is particularly concerning when these types of injuries are suffered by nursing home residents who are supposed to be carefully cared for. In fact, nursing home residents are actually more likely to suffer from a fall when compared to elderly persons residing elsewhere.

When a nursing home resident suffers an injury due to a fall which was caused by negligence on the part of the nursing home, the facility may be liable not only for the resulting medical bills but also for the pain and suffering that the elderly person experienced because of their injuries.
