From Senior Care to Human Trafficking in California

There are various forms of elder Abuse, nursing home neglect, and assisted living abuse that take place in Los Angeles and throughout California. When we think of abuse or neglect, we usually think of the elderly that is being cared for. However, in this case, the abuse was towards the employees at the Rainbow Bright day care center.

In latest news, a family in charge of running multiple senior care centers in San Mateo County California is charged with human trafficking. The four defendants aged 38 to 67 were accused of keeping their employees against their will, not paying the employees minimum wage / overtime, and even abusing them in all aspects.

This alleged abuse had occurred over a 9 year period! After receiving the complaint, the attorney general set out multiple task forces and agencies to conduct a year-long investigation including police departments in San Francisco, Daly City, Pacifica, and the US Department of Labor.

Charges include grand theft, rape, Human Trafficking, and 56 other criminal counts. The assailants, the Gamoses, allegedly targeted vulnerable Filipinos and those living here illegally. These Filipino employees were promised wages of around $1,100 per month working a normal full time shift.

According to complaint they had to work 24/7 with sometimes only a few hours of sleep, and were not permitted to speak with each other. They received threats of deportation or a pay decrease, and even had their passports taken from them in certain cases. According to the complaint many employees were also raped on multiple occasions and offered money for sexual acts.

No one should be subject to this sort of abuse! Unfortunately these types of things do happen. It’s important to be aware of our surroundings, gain the knowledge necessary to identify abuse, and report it to the proper law enforcement officials.
