Motor vehicle collisions occur at a frightening rate throughout New York neighborhoods. Whether the collision centers on moving vehicles such as cars and trucks or they involve pedestrians or bicyclists, the consequences are often dire. In any type of collision, bicyclists and pedestrians will suffer the worst injuries of anyone involved. Due to their lack of safety equipment and the differences in weight and force, if a vehicle strikes a bicyclist, the rider will likely struggle with life-threatening injuries. One injury that is common in this type of violent collision is a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Because every situation is unique, the Symptoms of a TBI can vary widely from victim to victim. Often, medical experts divide them into three categories:
- Physical damage: Some symptoms of TBI are directly visible with physical changes. From a ringing in the ears and blurred vision to insomnia and chronic headaches, medical professionals can often quickly measure changes in physical ability.
- Cognitive impairment: After a TBI, victims might notice changes in cognitive ability. Often, these symptoms lead to frustration and anger. Typically, a medical professional might uncover them through neurological tests. Confusion, difficulty following a conversation, difficulty following steps to complete a task and trouble making decisions can all indicate cognitive impairment.
- Personality changes: It is not uncommon for victims to experience personality changes. The challenge with these symptoms, is that the individual rarely notices a change in themselves – it is often friends or family that highlight the difference in personality. From mood swings and anxiety to irritability and depression, personality and emotional changes can be severe.
