Glastonbury rolls round once again.

It’s a good job we like festivals at Tardis, we certainly provide plant to enough of them and again this year we found ourselves at Glastonbury but in our case three weeks before any of the artistes, Delivering Waste Tanks as oft we do.

There’s still an air of magic about the place especially when you catch a glimpse of the iconic pyramid stage, but the sheer size of the place and the acres of rolling green countryside is certainly as impressive.

The first festival was held in 1970 and headlined by T Rex who according to Chris Evans on the wireless this morning, were paid in milk.

Ticket price back then was a pound.

Famous as we are in our own right for portable toilets, we note that in 1999, the Manic Street Preachers caused a little bit of an upset by putting a notice on a portable toilet declaring it exclusively for their use.

In 2002, forty thousand tubes of sun block were handed out by the welfare tent.

1987 was the year of the trouser thieves.  Overnight, hundres of pairs were stolen from tents and of course anything of value in the pockets removed by scallywags.  Next day trouserless men and women were seen wandering around the site.  Many of the stolen pants were discovered dumped in a muddy ditch

In 2007, it was reported that there were 2,485 miles of toilet paper on the site, enough to stretch from London to Baghdad.

30 Megawatts  of electricity is consumed at the festival, that’s enough to power a city the size of Bath.

In 2004, Paul McCartney was fined £ 1000 by the local council for playing past the curfew.

The iconic pyramid stage made its first appearance in 1971 and was made of corrugated sheeting and scaffolding poles.

The second incarnation came along in 1981and doubled as a cowshed in winter. It burned to the ground in 1991.

Rising from the ashes in the year 2000, the third stage appeared and is based on the great pyramid at Giza in Egypt. It is 40 metres x 40 metres and is constructed from materials approved by Greenpeace.

The rolling Stones, Radiohead, Oasis, Tom Jones, Paul Weller Peter Gabrial, Dame Shirley Bassey (and her pink diamond emblazoned Wellies), David Bowie and the Who are just of the big names who’ve performed on this iconic stage

Did you know, that there are over a hundred stages at the festival ?

If like us, you don’t actually get there, there’s excellent coverage across the BBCs TV, radio and digital platforms, so you can bop til you drop (as you young folk say) in the privacy of your own home, garden or down the pub.

This year’s line up includes:

Radiohead, Kris Kristofferson, Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Barry Gibb, The Pretenders, Liam Gallagher, The Jacksons, Hot House Flowers, Andy Fairweather – Low (and the Low Riders) and of course hundreds or other acts across the site.

Did you also know, that the cows who live on the farm the year round, are shipped off on their holidays to make way for the festival goers? In fact we didn’t see any when we were delivering waste tanks three weeks ago.

Time magazine named organiser Micheal Eavis as one of the most influential people on the planet, to which he responded, “I’ve got cows to sort out”.

However you’ll be taking in “Glasto” this year, enjoy the entertainment and at the time of writing, it looks set to be a mud free one.
