This woman’s best friend, Sarah, had a big milestone birthday coming up. So, she and the rest of her friends have been planning a surprise party for the past few months.
She was specifically in charge of organizing the nitty-gritty details of the event.
“Invitations were sent, decorations were up, and we even rented a venue,” she said.
“All was set for a memorable evening.”
But then, just one week before the big event, she received a call from another one of their close friends, Alex.
Alex admitted to overhearing Sarah talking about how much she actually hated surprises and big parties. In fact, Sarah apparently claimed that she would much rather celebrate her birthday with a more low-key dinner with a couple of close friends.
And obviously, given the surprise party she had spent so long planning, she felt immediately torn.
“On one hand, we had all these elaborate plans and so many people excited to celebrate with Sarah,” she explained.
“On the other hand, it seemed like Sarah would genuinely be unhappy with the whole ordeal.”

That’s why she ultimately decided to just come clean with her friend and have an open conversation with Sarah. She spilled the beans about their plans for a surprise party and also mentioned what she had heard from Alex.
It seemed like she had made the right decision, too, because Sarah made it clear that a big party just wouldn’t be comfortable for her. Instead, Sarah wanted to celebrate in a more intimate way.
So, in an effort to make the birthday girl happy, she made the difficult decision of canceling the party altogether and letting all of the guests know that the celebration was off.
But, while she might’ve done what Sarah wanted, some of her other friends are seriously ticked off at her.
“They’re saying I should have just gone through with it since the majority wanted the party,” she vented.
Thankfully, a few of her other friends are glad that she just canceled the event. After all, they didn’t want Sarah to be subjected to a party that she didn’t even want.
Nonetheless, with her friend group pretty divided over the issue, she’s now wondering whether canceling her friend’s Surprise Birthday Party was really the right way to handle the situation.
