She Doesn’t Want To Be A Bridesmaid In Her Best Friend’s Wedding Because It’s “Game Of Thrones” Themed, And She Doesn’t Want To Pay For A “Ridiculous” Costume

Not long ago, this 25-year-old woman found out that one of her best friends from college, Lila, also 25, got engaged.

She’s obviously thrilled for Lila, but her feelings quickly changed when Lila informed her of what she and her fiancé, Ben, 27, had planned for their upcoming Wedding.

As college freshmen, she and Lila were roommates. Then, they were roommates again during their junior year when they lived in an apartment off-campus. For their senior year, Lila shared an apartment with Ben, so she found a different roommate.

Several months later, it was the beginning of the pandemic.

While social distancing from others, Ben and Lila took that time trying to find some common interests and hobbies.

They loved date nights when they watched movies at home, so they decided to look for movies or TV shows that they could watch.

A month later, one of Ben’s friends said that they should try watching Game of Thrones, and after Ben and Lila gave the show a try, they were addicted to it.

“Aside from her chosen field of study/work, I have legitimately never seen Lila so passionate about something. It became her and Ben’s life. They watched the series, read the books, and even started dressing up for conventions. I thought it was super sweet, but I’m not much of a high fantasy person, and I’ve heard the show is heavy on gore, which I have a lot of trouble sitting through,” she said.

In 2021, Ben and Lila had a Game of Thrones re-watch party that they invited her to, but she said she couldn’t attend because of the content of the show. Since then, Lila never tried again to convince her to watch the show and told her she completely understood her reasoning for not wanting to watch it.

“While I would definitely call Lila and Ben’s interest in the show obsessive, they don’t push it onto other people, and it’s not caused issues so far when I or other friends aren’t into it,” she explained.

However, now she’s concerned because she doesn’t want to be a bridesmaid in Lila’s wedding due to the Game of Thrones theme that they’re planning. If she tells Lila she won’t participate, she’s scared that she’ll be upset.

In a group chat, Lila told her and everyone else within the chat that Lila had chosen them to be her bridesmaids. She responded with excitement, but immediately after that, Lila dove into the details of what being a bridesmaid would entail.

Even though she’s not sure if she’s being a jerk, she doesn’t want to spend money on a dress and getting her hair and makeup done when she would end up looking like one of the characters from the show. In her opinion, it’s silly.

“She and her husband are going to be married dressed as their favorite characters (who are also either in a relationship or they think they should be? All the names are hard to keep up with, and I get them confused), and the bridesmaids and groomsmen will also be styled to look like other characters, and the guests will be asked to wear the ‘house colors’ of the character the bride or the groom is dressed as, depending on which one invited them,” she shared.

Despite not yet being designated with which characters they will be asked to dress up as she doesn’t want to participate in it as a bridesmaid at all.

She obviously hopes for Lila and Ben to have a wonderful ceremony just how they’ve dreamed it would be, but she doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on costumes to dress up as fictional characters.

In her view, the whole thing seems strange, yet she wants to support Lila and doesn’t want to be a jerk.

Her main concern is that Lila’s vision is for the dresses to be incredibly elaborate, requiring some pricey, styled lace fronts that would be added to the dresses. She doesn’t want to shell out tons of money for something she’ll feel humiliated wearing.

She then clarified that she doesn’t believe that Lila and Ben’s wedding theme is dumb, and she doesn’t despise Game of Thrones, either.

The cost concerns her because not only will the dresses be expensive, but the custom-made wigs will also cost a lot. Also, after the wedding, Lila will be taking back all of the costumes and wigs to have on display in a room in her home dedicated to Game of Thrones.

She cares about Lila very much, and she feels like the theme is interesting, but she doesn’t think that she’ll be able to afford everything required in order to be a bridesmaid. And even if she could pay for it all, she wouldn’t feel comfortable in the costume in the first place, and then she’d have to give everything she paid for back to Lila after the wedding anyway. She would never have the opportunity to wear any of it again if she ever decided that she wanted to.

Lila’s wedding will be in the spring, and the ceremony will be outside, so she’s concerned that with the heavy costume, she’ll get too hot.

What would you do if you were in her shoes?
