We all know how important it is to feed kids healthy diets to support their development. 

Unfortunately, we live in a time where keeping our kitchens stocked with a lot of healthy and nutritious food is very pricey. 

One woman recently upset her sister-in-law after she started introducing her niece to healthier meals that she cannot afford or take the time to cook.

She’s 29 and has been babysitting her five-year-old niece after her sister-in-law became a single mom this year.

Her sister-in-law works a minimum-wage job and wanted to take on some extra shifts, so she began babysitting for her most weekday nights.

The arrangement has been working out really well, and she has a great bond with her niece. However, she became concerned when she noticed her niece’s eating habits.

“I’ve noticed whenever we’ve been over to my sister-in-law’s, her fridge is severely lacking in fresh foods,” she said.

“I totally understand how expensive grocery shopping can be and how much of a privilege it is to buy fresh food each week. Therefore, I don’t blame her one bit. When I first started babysitting my niece, my sister-in-law instructed that her favorite foods were frozen chicken nuggets and fries.”

Her sister-in-law told her that her niece would eat the frozen food every night and be fine with it. Since she loves to cook and is passionate about nutrition, she thought she’d take advantage of the evenings with her niece and introduce her to some healthy foods.

“I began to introduce her to more vegetables, meats, and seafood to make sure she was getting adequate nutrition,” she explained.

“Recently, I’ve made her pan-seared salmon, steamed Chilean sea bass, mapo tofu, Peking duck, lemon asparagus, [and] braised bok choy, to name a few. And the thing is, she absolutely loves every single dish.”

Now, her niece has become a foodie and has had a lot of fun trying all of these new foods. She’s also recently started helping her in the kitchen.

She didn’t think she was doing anything wrong by changing up her niece’s diet until a few days ago when her sister-in-law called her and was very angry. Her sister-in-law told her to stop feeding her daughter fancy, rich people stuff and accused her of harming her relationship with her daughter because she’s started refusing the frozen food she tries to serve at home.

A month ago, she bought a bunch of fresh groceries for her sister-in-law and left them at her house so she could make her niece the new recipes she taught her whenever she was home. However, her niece told her that her sister-in-law had ended up throwing that food away.

“I was appalled but chose not to confront my sister-in-law,” she recalled.

“It made me livid to have her bash me for caring for her daughter’s well-being and nutrition. I told her as such and called her ungrateful for throwing out my groceries and that she should be thankful her daughter is eating well.”

Her sister-in-law became offended and started crying on the phone before hanging up. While she sympathizes with her sister-in-law, she wishes she’d do a better job at prioritizing her niece’s nutrition and doesn’t think she did anything wrong by helping her out. Did she overstep by introducing her niece to a new diet, or was she being helpful?
