She Got Accused Of “Ruining” Steve Irwin For Her Friend’s Teenaged Daughter After Talking About The Time She Met Him

This 38-year-old woman recently got to visit one of her friend’s homes to stay the night. And while she was there, she realized that her friend’s Daughter, who is 13, spent a few hours watching old episodes of the TV show “The Crocodile Hunter” with Steve Irwin.

That sparked a conversation between her and her friend, and she found out that the teen had become pretty interested in wildlife and nature. That’s why her friend got their daughter some of the old episodes to watch.

Anyway, she actually thought that was really cool– especially because she grew up near Beerwah, Australia, which is close to the Australia Zoo.

So, she went there a lot in her younger years and even got to see Steve in person a few times for talks and other small group gatherings before she moved to the United States for work.

After she told her friend that, they thought her stories were awesome, too. And her friend even told her that she should definitely tell the teen about the experiences.

So, later that evening, she decided to head into the living room to talk to her friend’s daughter.

“I got to see Steve a couple of times before he died, and later Bindi,” she told the teen.

At that point, her friend’s daughter became super excited and started asking her a ton of questions.

She wound up talking about how Steve had seemed like a great guy. She also discussed everything she could remember about the animals.

Then, she retold the story of the first-ever “talk” she went to. Apparently, for that talk, Steve had filled in as a cover for a different zookeeper who had called in sick.

So, Steve told her group that he had actually cleaned out the primate houses right before the talk and had not had a chance to shower yet. That’s why he told her and the rest of their group that they might not want a front-row seat.

“And I didn’t listen and got one anyways. And ooof, I regretted it,” she explained to her friend’s daughter.

“I am sure it was a great talk and a treasured memory looking back, but at the time, all I could think about was how not to gag!”

Once she finished telling that story, though, she realized that her friend’s daughter was actually horrified. Then, the teen commented, “Ewww, he smelled bad?”

She was kind of taken aback by her friend’s daughter’s response, too, and pointed out how not smelling that great is a given when you are around animals all day.

She also clarified how, that day, Steve probably just smelled worse than normal. Nonetheless, she claimed that he did still smell pretty bad other times when she got close to him, as did Bindi.

But in addition to being interested in wildlife and nature right now, her friend’s daughter is apparently also very into perfumes, spas, and simply smelling nice.

So, ever since she told the teen about Steve smelling bad, her friend has been furious at her because the story reportedly “dampened” the teen’s dream of working with wildlife or even just watching nature shows on TV.

“Of all the things to share with her, did you really have to bring up how Steve Irwin smelled like monkey waste when you met him and distracted you from the talk?” her friend asked her on the phone the next day.

Her friend also claimed that the story was inappropriate to tell a young girl and seemed disrespectful to Steve Irwin’s memory.

Honestly, though, she does not think her story was inappropriate in the slightest.

“I think it’s a realistic part of the work Steve did and was certainly something that stuck in my memory,” she vented.

“And if anything, it made me respect the work he did more!”

Regardless, since her friend is still angry with her, she’s been left wondering whether “ruining” Steve Irwin for her friend’s daughter made her a jerk or not.

Do you agree that being honest about the realities of working with animals is important? Was her friend’s daughter, who is 13, really too young to hear that story? How would you reconcile this situation?
