Good news everyone! Early last year, The Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening revealed he was creating a new animated series for Netflix. This week, we’re learning that the series will be in a fantasy setting, and that Netflix has already ordered two seasons of 10 episodes each.
The series is called Disenchantment, and like all his other works, it’ll be an adult animated comedy. Netflix and Groening have only revealed the general premise, but it’s already off to a good start — one of the main characters is an elf named Elfo. Elfo will be following around Princess Bean, who drinks a lot and has a literal, corporeal personal demon named Luci. It’s high adventure from there, as they wander through Dreamland, a medieval-style land that has seen better days.
You might recognize some voices. Princess Bean will be performed by Abbi Jacobson, who has some experience with Netflix and animation — she was Emily on BoJack Horseman. Elfo will be voiced by Nat Faxon, who did a little work on Family Guy before appearing in Friends from College, a Netflix original series that came out earlier this month. Luci is Eric Andre, of the gloriously weird talk show on Adult Swim.
This will be the first time a major Matt Groening project won’t get it’s start on Fox. Should be interesting — you have to figure that Groening has had to hold a lot back over the years on network television, so this is the first time we’ll really be able to see him unleashed.
Exciting times! So, is Disenchantment going to be like an adult Adventure Time where Princess Bubblegum goes on a bender and just never stops? Maybe! We’ll find out pretty soon. Netflix plans to stream the first 10-episode season sometime in 2018.
