Earlier this week, we took a look at Countable, an app you can use to look at pending legislation and get in touch with your Congressional representatives. Today, we have the opposite of that. If you’re ready to throw your hands up and be done with it all, a new browser Extension for Chrome will wipe away all mentions of politics from your Facebook news feed. It’s the nuclear option.

Given the whole furor over fake news, I had to go ahead and make sure this thing checks out. It does! The Remove All Politics From Facebook extension is kind of amazing outside of itself — it may be that you’ve completely forgotten what Facebook used to look like, when you were just getting updates about the cool or whatever stuff your friends were doing. Simpler times.

The extension isn’t a technical marvel. The creator, John Brunsfeld, said in responses to some user reviews that the extension simply scans for 10 political keywords and hides the post if it has one. That does mean the occasional non-political post will get laid low in the culling, but for some, this may be a sacrifice worth bearing.

There is, regrettably, some bad news. While the rare political post does manage to make its way through, the nature of the extension means it can do nothing about the lowest form of political posting — the meme, presented without comment. We can only hope the nation’s top independent developers are working on a solution.
