Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ): What You Need to Know

On the 8th April 2019, Transport for London (TFL) implemented the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) which aims to reduce the levels of pollution within London improve air quality. The scheme is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. The only exception being Christmas Day. It includes the same area of central London as the Congestion Charge.

From 25 October 2021, the ULEZ is expanding from central London to create a single, larger zone up to, but not including, the North and South Circular.

Donate your scrap car with Giveacar and receive your certificate of destruction to apply for the scrappage scheme. Call us on 0207 736 4242 today.

ULEZ Scrappage Scheme & Giveacar

TFL scrappage scheme offers up to £6,000 towards a Vehicle that doesn’t meet the ULEZ standards. However, TFL requires you to organise the scrappage yourself and to provide them with a Certificate of Destruction from an Authorised Treatment Facility. The ULEZ car and motorcycle scrappage scheme is open to those who live within the 32 London boroughs or the City of London and receive certain disability benefits.

The scheme offers two payments:

  • £1,000 to scrap a motorcycle or moped
  • £2,000 to scrap a car

Your vehicle must not meet the current ULEZ emissions standards and the grant can be used to purchase a vehicle compliant with the ULEZ standards.

To be eligible for the scheme you could donate your vehicle to Giveacar and receive your certificate of destruction. Giveacar only partners with Authorised Treatment Facilities who are licensed by the Environment Agency to dispose of vehicles properly and to provide a CoD to the vehicle’s prior owner. Join the TFL ULEZ scheme and raise money for a charitable cause you care for.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The daily charge runs from midnight, seven days a week, all year round with Christmas Day the only exception. It covers the same area as the current Congestion Charge Zone. It should also be acknowledged that the ULEZ charge is in addition to the Congestion Zone Charge that is already in place. The enforcement of the ULEZ is based on the declared emissions, not the vehicle’s age. To find out if your vehicle meets the current emissions standards click here.

Your vehicle must meet the ULEZ emissions standards or you will need to pay a daily charge to drive within the zone:

  • £12.50 for most vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles, and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes)
  • £100 for heavier vehicles, including lorries (over 3.5 tonnes) and buses/coaches (over 5 tonnes)

How to Pay

If your vehicle fails to meet the above minimum standards, then you can pay using several means:

  • Register for AutoPay (note a £10 admin fee applies per vehicle)
  • Pay online from the 8th April 2019
  • Download the official TFL app to pay from the 8th April 2019
  • By phone:
    • UK: 0343 222 2222 (TFL call charges)
    • International: +44 20 7649 9122
    • Textphone: 020 7649 9123 (if you have impaired hearing)

ULEZ Benefits

Giveacar supports TFL’s ULEZ initiative as it seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of London’s residents while acknowledging the importance of lowering our consumption of the planet’s resources. Road transport is the biggest source of emissions damaging health in central London. Around half of the emissions of nitrogen oxides come from transport. Air pollution increases people’s risk of heart and lung disease.

The introduction of ULEZ helps reduce these emissions and improve air quality. This will help to make London a safer and more pleasant place to live and work. The associated health and wellbeing benefits of the ULEZ seem difficult to ignore which is why Giveacar supports its introduction.

Help Your Community

Why not go the extra mile by donating your vehicle to a charity within London and help improve the lives of others by creating a cleaner and healthier community in your area.

Wheels for All is an initiative from Cycling Projects which offers children and adults with disabilities and differing needs the chance to enjoy cycling activities. Your car can help fund this fantastic scheme.

You can donate your car to London Wildlife Trust who can keep the suburban wildlife in your borough flourishing. Having a healthy habitat for wildlife creates a nurturing environment for families. It also maintains balance in the animal kingdom.

If you wish to take further action against vehicle emissions and climate change, think of Trees for Cities when donating your vehicle with Giveacar. Donating your car to Trees for Cities will help bring cleaner air to London. It’ll also support providing green spaces to be enjoyed all year round.

In donating your car to London Cycling Campaign you can support them in their strive for a healthier and safer network for cyclists. Your unwanted car can help fund safer routes for children cycling to school.

Our Scrap Partners

Giveacar operates its scrap car collection scheme nation-wide. We are proud to work closely with a number of Authorise Treatment Facilities (ATF) who collect on our behalf. We also have trusted auction partners if we think your car would raise more for charity at auction. Your confirmation email will detail the specific organisation that we have assigned to your collection. However, a smaller subcontractor may be responsible for the actual collection. It is legislation that all vehicles that are scrapped must be issued with a Certificate of Destruction. When your vehicle is completely scrapped and recycled, the ATF will issue a certificate of destruction within seven days.

If you have any questions give us a call and we will be happy to answer them. Alternatively, head over to our FAQ’s and see if your question has been answered there.
