Ultra-Low Emission Zone: What You Need to Know

Ultra-Low Emission Zone: What You Need to Know

On the 8th April 2019 Transport for London will initialise their Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) which aims to reduce the levels of pollution within the city and therefore lower the number of vehicle emission related illnesses and deaths.

The TfL Scrappage Scheme & Giveacar

Giveacar is an organisation that is festooned in the art of turning a negative into a positive. By embracing unwanted, neglected or unusable vehicles and donating the proceeds raised through scrap or auction to charity, we are giving a new lease of life to both the vehicles that are donated and the causes our donors support.

TfL has developed a scrappage scheme, offering up to £6000 towards a vehicle that meets the ULEZ standards. However, TfL require you to organise the scrappage yourself and to provide them with a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) from an Authorised Treatment Facility.

To gain eligibility onto the scheme you could donate your vehicle to Giveacar and receive your CoD. Giveacar only partners with Authorised Treatment Facilities who are licensed by the Environment Agency to dispose of vehicles properly and to provide CoD’s to the vehicles prior owner. Join the TfL ULEZ scheme and raise money for a charitable cause you care for.

Help Your Community

Why not go the extra mile by donating your vehicle to a charity within London and help improve the lives of others by creating a cleaner and healthier community in your area.

Wheels for All is an initiative from Cycling Projects which offers children and adults with disabilities and differing needs the chance to enjoy cycling activities. Your car can help fund this fantastic scheme.

You can donate your car to London Wildlife Trust who can keep the suburban wildlife in your borough flourishing. Having a healthy and proactive habitat for wildlife creates a nurturing environment for families whilst maintaining balance in the animal kingdom, so consider London Wildlife Trust when you donate your car.

If you wish to take further action against vehicle emissions and climate change, think of Trees for Cities when donating your vehicle with Giveacar. By donating your car to Trees for Cities you can help bring cleaner air to London whilst providing green spaces to be enjoyed all year round.

In donating your car to London Cycling Campaign you can support them in their strive for a healthier and safer network for cyclists. Your unwanted car can help fund safer routes for children cycling to school.

How the ULEZ Benefits You

Giveacar supports TfL’s ULEZ initiative as it seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of London’s residents while acknowledging the importance of lowering our consumption of the planet’s resources.

50% of London’s toxic air comes from road transport and 40% originates from diesel vehicles (2). Consequently, over 9,000 Londoners are dying prematurely every year (1) from the toxic air produced by vehicles that don’t meet the minimum standards.

Some 6 million car journeys are made every day by Londoners, however 2 million of these journeys are under 2km (3). That’s just 10 minutes by bicycle and 20 minutes walking. 1 in 6 deaths could be prevented if everyone walked or cycled 20 minutes each day (6) and 24.6% of all educational establishments are in areas that breach the legal limit for NO2 (4). Therefore, commuting on foot or by bicycle is not only a healthy and quick mode of transport, but it could also save lives of London’s pedestrians and cyclists of which 65 were lost in vehicle collisions in 2018 (8).

Researchers from the University of East Anglia found that walking and cycling to work also improved individual wellbeing, sleep, happiness and work performance whilst lowering stress levels (7). The associated health and wellbeing benefits of the ULEZ seem difficult to ignore which is why Giveacar supports its introduction into our capital to act as a statement of a cleaner, healthier and happier society.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The daily charge will run from midnight, seven days a week, all year round. It will cover the same area as the current Congestion Zone pictured. It should also be acknowledged that the ULEZ charge is in addition to the Congestion Zone Charge that is already in place. The enforcement of the ULEZ is based on the declared emissions, not the vehicles age.
