The Joys of Walkable Neighborhoods in Charleston

–Drew Grossklaus, Sales Director/BIC East Cooper

In Charleston, we are incredibly fortunate to have beautiful walkable neighborhoods. I was recently in Washington D.C. and when I travel, I like to explore a new place by foot to get a feel for the neighborhood and housing options. It is a wonderful way to experience how a place integrates public gathering spaces like parks, commercial buildings like restaurants and offices, and of course, the architecture and style of housing. Walking a neighborhood gives one a sense of place and a feeling of how others live and thrive in different geographic locations.

One of the most intriguing things about Charleston is walking in different places and the feelings that are awakened. Many already know that it is easy to achieve this sense of walkability in the streets of downtown Charleston. The history of our city and America abounds at every turn – and not just on the cobblestone streets. It is something that everyone who visits Charleston needs to experience and those that live here appreciate and revisit. After all, it’s fun to be a tourist in your own town from time to time.

What you may not know about the Lowcountry is that there are many other walkable neighborhoods in Charleston. Our island communities like Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms and Folly Beach offer great beaches to take a stroll. However, if you venture off the sand and into the neighborhoods you will see wonderful architecture that exudes a coastal lifestyle. Classic bungalows nestled next to elevated beachfront homes create an expansive architectural mix. It is also fun to see how the homes’ outdoor spaces lend themselves to the joys of island living. You’ll often see stunning pools, golf cart parking, outdoor showers and storage for beach gear like surfboards, paddle boards and boogie boards.

If you venture inland, you will see yet another side of Charleston. Walk around Daniel Island where parts of the neighborhood feature beautiful Lowcountry homes constructed in the last 20 years. There is a marsh path that weaves around the edge of the island along the water and the marsh that connects the land. One of my favorite neighborhood walks is one that I do almost every day in Mount Pleasant’s award-winning I’On community. I’On serves as the neighborhood for our William Means headquarters and has some of the most beautifully designed homes and spaces in Charleston. When I am asked what makes I’On so special, I always say “take a walk and you will see.

If you are ready to live in Charleston or maybe find a different home in the area to love – I say, take a walk. If you need guidance, one of our agents at William Means would be happy to take that walk with you and fill in some of the finer points of our amazing Charleston neighborhoods.
