It seems that most areas close to or on the beach in Charleston tend to be filled with visitors and kids during the tourist season, as expected.  If you own property on Isle of Palms, Wild Dunes or even Folly Beach then you probably have become accustomed to the surge of tourism several months out of the year with new faces you’ve never seen before, an abundance of children, loud music, beach parties and the list goes on and on…

Well, as you may or may not know, there is a barrier Island tucked right in between the Isle of Palms and Downtown Charleston. This island has a population of around 2000 full time and part time residents. Less than 1000 properties and of those 1000 properties very few rental properties, no motels, hotels or bed and breakfast spots that usually send the open arm invitation to out of towners. No you won’t find that here! What you will find is a small group of restaurants frequented by the locals, miles of beach that you can almost call your own and a small town full of rich history.

So lets talk about the history...briefly. The town was first incorporated in 1817 but since then the name Moultrieville has changed to Sullivan’s Island. Back then, and continuing today, every lot must set on at least a half acre of land. Sullivan’s Island has a rich military background, protecting our harbor from invading ships. This protection can still be seen today at Fort Moultrie and while over on that side of the island you can take a look at Sullivan’s Lighthouse. The lighthouse is still active and just over 50 years old (not much history there), but interesting to look at.

Sullivan’s Island is one of the best places to live while still being able to enjoy the beach, local hangouts and history with minimal out of towners interfering with the charm and tranquility. There are homes on the island that range from all sorts of shapes and sizes and surely there is one that would be your perfect fit.
