When you need auto insurance you'll find that you have a lot of choices, and you might not be sure which one you want to pick, or what combination of them you need. To help clear it up, here are some of the different kinds of auto insurance you'll find:
Liability - this is basic coverage that is generally required by law in most states. There are a few states that don't require insurance, but most do. It covers the damage that you do with your vehicle.
Bodily injury - to protect you and your passengers in the event of an accident, you'll need bodily injury coverage, which is usually required. Sometimes it's called personal injury protection, or PIP.
Uninsured motorists - Even though people are required to have insurance by law, some of them don't. This coverage will pay your medical bills if you get hit by someone who doesn't have insurance, but it won't pay to fix your car. Only collision coverage will do that.
Comprehensive - this covers fire, theft, and glass breakage, and it's a good idea if your car is newer and still worth quite a bit. It's also required if your car is financed.
Collision - If you owe money on your vehicle, you'll have to have collision, too. It's part of what most people call 'full coverage' auto insurance, and lien holders require it. For vehicles that are still worth a lot and that owners really want to protect, collision is a great idea even if the vehicle is no longer financed.
There are many other things that you can get on your insurance policy, too. There are opportunities for rental car coverage, roadside assistance, and mechanical breakdown coverage, among other choices. If you aren't sure what insurance you need, though, it's best to talk to someone who has knowledge. You don't have to buy auto insurance from the first person you talk to, either, so don't feel any pressure to conform to what that agent wants you to do. Instead, just pay attention to the options that they present to you and make sure that you really understand what the different kinds of coverage mean.
