New Self-Healing Concrete Coating

Cracks are a major problem for roads, driveways, and parking lots; however, the threat to Concrete buildings and structures is even stronger. Bridges and buildings can’t survive the damage roads encounter. The New York Times reported in 2013 that America has 70,000 structurally deficient bridges in the United States. A self-healing Concrete Coating may be the solution for road surfaces and buildings alike.

A concrete coating has been developed in South Korea that allows for healing with a commonly found resource: the sun. Many concrete coatings have been made throughout history to help patch concrete cracks. Unfortunately, most attempts at repair don’t last very long. The new concrete coating creates a protective layer through the use of polymer microcapsules. The microcapsules actually stop the concrete from breaking down on a molecular level.

How Does Concrete Coating Work?

With concrete coating, cracking ruptures the microcapsules within the coating. When the microcapsules rupture, they release the healing agent. Then, as the sun shines on the concrete, it activates and solidifies the sealant

The technology looks like a simple spray-on coating. The use of the sun as a healing catalyst sets this healing concrete coating apart from other coatings that are making use of microcapsules.

Not only is using the sun as a catalyst more cost-effective, but it also lasts much longer. This coating is predicted to last for a full year while previously-developed coatings break down after only four months.
