How to best prepare for a job interview

Preparing for a job interview is an exciting and nerve-wracking time. Whether it’s your dream job, you’re getting back into work or looking for a tasty promotion, you will want to impress.

The company must have been interested in your CV, so be confident.

But now you have a chance to make the perfect first impression on those who will likely be deciding who to hire.

Here are some things to put in place to ensure you shine on the interview day.

Do your research

A bit of research about the company is useful so you can express some shared values with your future (we hope!) employers.

“Why do you want to work for this company?” is also a common question used by interviewers to check how thorough candidates are – if they don’t look into the company properly, how diligent will they be in work?

Be sure to properly research the role too, and outline which of your skills will match each part of the job spec. Most companies will gladly answer questions from prospects regarding specifics about the role and organisation – doing so might give you an initial interaction with your interviewer before meeting them, and you might stand out as a result.

Prepare answers for the most likely questions

Put yourself in your interviewer’s shoes. What would you want to know from someone applying for your job?

Do you know someone who already works in a similar industry? Consider asking them how their recruitment process went and compare notes with your job description.

Also, think about your previous roles and pick out case studies that can relate to the job you’re applying for, whether it’s job-specific experience or soft skills, like leadership and being a team player.

Plan your journey

The last thing you need is to add to your butterflies by suffering a stressful trip.

Is the interview location walkable? Will you be driving? Can public transport get you there? If opting for the latter, consider catching earlier services to minimise anxiety.

If your car breaks down unexpectedly before your interview and you don’t have any spare funds, considering loans for people with bad credit could help to get your car repaired in time if you’re worried about your credit score. But you should always budget to ensure that you can meet the repayment terms if you do opt for a loan.

Get your outfit ready

The old adage tends to ring true – if you look good, you feel good. Confidence is key in these situations, so dressing well can help you feel comfortable, as well as give off a professional vibe to your interviewers.Picking out the right outfit when visiting the workplace might help them picture you in the position!
