How to prepare your house for a house sale

Selling your house is a whole lot easier when you present it in the best possible light to potential buyers. This will give the buyer a vision of what their life could look like if they were to make the purchase. If they like that idea, you’ll be able to sell your home even faster.

With around 28 million households in the UK, you’ll want to make sure you impress and find a buyer quickly before they opt for another home. With that in mind, we have picked out our top tips for preparing your house for sale.

Depersonalise

The perfect way to create a space where your potential buyers can envision themselves living is to depersonalise it. Allow their imagination to run wild by showing it not as your home but as their potential new home.

To do this, you’ll have to take down the pictures of your kids or remove posters from your games room – as cool as they may be – to create a blank canvas for new buyers.

Better lighting

Make sure you are showing off all the incredible features in your home by increasing the light shining around it. Turn all the lights and lamps on, particularly in dark rooms, and ensure all curtains or blinds are open to let in natural light.

We do, however, recommend that you turn off distracting objects that emit light, such as TVs, which could distract the buyer’s eye from the beauty of the house.

Declutter

What might not seem like clutter to you could be seen that way by potential buyers, so leave no stone unturned and ensure your house is clear of any distractions.

Make sure that all surfaces are clear of possessions unless they are there to wow people when they view your property. Make sure any mess is cleaned up and remove dust, cobwebs or any other eyesores that could put them off.

Nothing needing repair

As with clutter, broken items around the house can be a concern for prospective buyers so make sure all items are in working order. A home with no such issues shows it has been well looked after over the years, which will only increase the confidence they have in this purchase.

Go for neutral colours

Having neutral colours on the walls is the best way to sell your home, as people are far less likely to have any issues with them.

If your walls are filled with bright and unique colours, you could hire a professional decorator to repaint your home. However, as moving is always an expensive process, make sure you consider your finances before agreeing to pay for work to be done.

Colours are objective so don’t let personal taste get in the way of a sale.
