In November 2018, I spoke at an event in Genoa, Italy for a big corporate client. I arrived the day before I was scheduled to Speak. One of the reasons why I went early, was so I could “walk the room” beforehand.

I decided to shoot the video below so that you could walk with me while I explained the things that I was looking for. Let’s take a look.

Whenever I have an important speech or presentation, I always visit the room beforehand and walk around. There are several reasons why you should too.

1. You can see things from the audience’s perspective.

2. You can walk the stage and see how things look from there.

3. You can check if any places where the stage creaks or where the lighting is bad or where the view of some audience members might be obstructed. In such cases, mark the spot(s) with coloured tape. The audience won’t see it but you will and you will thus be able to avoid those areas.

4. You can speak with the Technicians. It is important to have a good working relationship with the technicians at the event. They are your best friends!

5. You can test the microphone. The technicians will help you with this. If there are no technicians, have someone go to the back of the room and signal whether they can hear you easily and clearly.

6. You can test your computer if you have slides.

7. You can adjust the lighting and temperature, if necessary.

8. You can make sure that the room is set up properly (tables, chairs, supplies, etc.).

9. You can get comfortable with the room.

10. You can avoid unpleasant surprises during your speech or presentation.
