As Windows 10 progresses and matures, older versions fall off Microsoft’s radar and are no longer supported. Microsoft’s support clock never stops ticking, so it’s no surprise that they recently announced the end of support for the original version of Windows 10 (version 1507). This comes into effect on 26^th March 2017.

Why It’s Important to Stay Up to Date with System Updates

Updates to software and operating systems are cumulative, meaning the latest version builds on the one preceding it. If a Computer system is running a much older version, there’s every chance it won’t be possible to upgrade to the latest version since some of the building blocks needed won’t be there. It could be likened to trying to put a new roof on a house without having adequate joists in place. Effective IT support makes sure updates are correctly installed as they are released. Routine updates may include:

·       Fixes for security issues

·       New features or functionality

For any device or PC to continue operating at peak efficiency and maintain compatibility with other devices, the latest updates are necessary.

Patchy IT support, that may miss or neglect software upgrades, leaves businesses especially vulnerable.

What End of Original Windows 10 Support Means

First, let’s say what it doesn’t mean: Microsoft may be ending support for Windows 10 Version 1507, but the sky won’t fall in for anyone still using that version.

Computers will still work, they will simply be running on out of date operating systems and will no longer receive updates such as vital security patches.

Why Is Microsoft Discontinuing Windows Version 1507?

You may notice that the original version of Windows 10 is labelled 1507, with the number denoting the year and month of its release. Microsoft only supports two Current Branch for Business (CBB) versions at any one time. The original version 1507 was followed by 1511 in November 2015, and then in July last year version 1607 was released.

The 1607 release signalled the end of support for Windows 10 1507, giving it roughly 60 days notice once the new version was added to the CBB track.

This Microsoft product life cycle is well established, and one which your IT support department or personnel should be well aware of and plan for.

We can, for instance, know with some certainty that support for version 1511 (the version that immediately followed the original windows 10 version) will end once a new version replaces the current 1607 one.

What You Should Do

As previously mentioned, Windows 10 version 1507 will carry on working although lack of support means users are vulnerable should anything go wrong. It’s frustrating enough when personal computers slow down or stop working altogether, but for businesses the results can be catastrophic.
