Project: HMS Indefatigable

The Hms Indefatigable project is well on the way. Her outer hull has been planked and the stern gallery structure has been completed.  The image below shows her bows while under construction.
The image below shows her starboard side: wales, gun ports and decks to go on next.  Each Model I create is first designed from all the available info. They could be drawings, paintings and in some cases, even just anecdotal  bits of information. As an engineer I probably have a different approach to building an historic ship model than a model builder would. Whatever the case, I do pride myself on using the same accuracy in designing and building a ship model as I would in designing a life size modern cruiser. I can only hope it shows in  the final result.
A little bit more stern detail shown below. Curves meeting curves, joining with more curves and then blending with ... you guessed it .... even more curves ... oh .... did I mention all the angles? Designing and building historical ships in scale, gives one a whole new appreciation of the skills and artistry of the original shipwrights, carpenters and carvers. Additionally, seeing some of their their works all shot up with cannon balls must have been .... well .... criminal!
A little bit about the design process
