How I Started Freelancing (Part Two)

How I Started Freelancing Part Two

Recap

Finally, I realised I wanted to be my own boss and little did I know that it would be even harder to achieve!

After 6 Months Working with the most supportive lawyer turned businessman, I quit my part time job. I felt really sad to leave such a great company but it is something I need to sacrifice in order to achieve my dream.

The first thing I did after quitting – I bought a laptop and got Internet Connection. It was the biggest investment I made, and also quite a risk as I didn’t know how far I would be able to go with this “freelancing” career. It was all so new to me.

After I got the laptop and internet connection, I started researching how I can make use of my investment to earn money from home. I remembered my loved ones said that I made the biggest mistake in life for not having a secure full time job. With that in mind, I had a tough time to prove them wrong.

The first month was very bad. I advertised my services at all the places I can find online (can’t remember them all) but no success. I searched all the freelancing websites hoping there might be any leads. It took a very long time for me to land my first Freelance gig. It was a Freelance Writing assignment involving $1-2 per article. The rate was so low I could barely survive but with persistence and consistence, I managed to get through.

After several months working on small jobs with meagre pay, I finally landed a bigger gig that I got through an ad I posted on Craigslist. I was so happy because it was a long-term freelance Writing job with slightly higher pay. At this point, life was better and happier.

So, what have I learned over the years?

1. Persistence

2. Consistence

3. Patience

These are the most important keywords to remember, if you want to join the freelancing world. We have seen many successful freelancers but you need to understand, it takes time to reach their level.

Of course, it is never easy to take the first step to be your own boss. Fear and insecurity will always haunt us, but there is always the “one thing” that will surpass all barriers. What is the “one thing”?
