Many Businesses struggled with shutting down or reducing their operations, but a disaster recovery expert warns that it will be even harder for them to reopen.

Reasons for the Difference

Chloe Demrovsky, the Disaster Recovery Institute International CEO, spoke to CNBC and outlined the range of problems that businesses will face as they reopen. The Disaster Recovery Institute International is a non-profit that assists companies with planning for and recovering from disasters.

Of the difficulties, the most important is that businesses will have to show customers and the government that they have sufficient safety measures in place. Just assuming that a business is safe will not be enough for customers. They will want to see the measures and steps being taken.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to the problem, making it more complicated. Every sector is different, and businesses will also have to take various measures based on the size of the company.

Example Changes for Restaurants

Restaurants are likely to have some of the most visible changes in all the industries. There will likely be temperature checks at the doors and new layouts that allow for the accommodation of social distancing. Tables could be spaced further apart, or some tables could be blocked off. Some restaurants may also install barriers made of Plexiglass to further separate customers and start using disposable utensils to reduce the spread of germs.

Example Changes for Retailers

Retailers will also likely have visible changes, with many requiring employees to use personal protective gear. Some stores may also need shoppers to wear masks or place other restrictions into place.

Those who are used to visiting stores with products, testers, or samples, from lotion to makeup to food samples at grocery stores will see a change. Those testers and samples are unlikely to be available anymore. If stores do want to continue offering those testers, they would have to be via individually-packaged versions.

Other Advice for Businesses

Demrovsky said that businesses who are currently closed and working on their plans to reopen could look to those that have remained open for ideas of appropriate measures. For example, they could look at actions taken by grocery stores. Groceries are limiting the number of people in the store and marking spots in line that are six feet apart.

This caution from a disaster recovery expert is particularly important now as several states are starting to slowly reopen, especially given the advice of health experts that reopening should not occur without widespread testing.
