LVMH Will Manufacture Free Hand Sanitizer in Its Cosmetics and Perfume Factories

Given the state of the world, some retailers are making significant changes. Between the likely loss in sales in the immediate future and the high demand for hand Sanitizer, Lvmh decided to start producing hand sanitizer in its perfume and cosmetics factories in France. The hand sanitizer will be free, making the decision even more impressive.

The Announcement

In the middle of March, LVMH announced that it was starting to prepare its production sites for cosmetics and perfume to make hydroalcoholic gel instead. The announcement was made on a Sunday with the note that beginning the next day, Monday, the factories would start production.

These facilities are typically used to produce makeup and perfume for Givenchy, Christian Dior, and other LVMH brands.

The Free Disinfectant

LVMH plans to deliver its disinfectant for free to the French authorities as well as the biggest European hospital system, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris.

Not only is the disinfectant free for that facility and the authorities, but LVMH is committed to producing it “for as long as necessary.” During that time, the company will work with the French health authorities to determine how long it will be required.

The Reasons

In its announcement, the company said that this decision was made to help address the low supply of hand sanitizer in France. The company wants people to be able to take the necessary safety precautions to help prevent the spread of the virus.

This announcement came as the number of coronavirus cases in France rose. By the time LVMH announced its plans to make the hand sanitizers on March 15, the world already had 156,000 coronavirus infections and 5,833 deaths. France had already closed non-essential stores, cafes, and restaurants as well.

Other Companies Are Also Helping

LVMH is just one example of major companies working to help the fight against coronavirus. Many distilleries and breweries have also started making hand sanitizer. Some of them are even giving it out for free. Pernod Richard, a French drink company, is donating pure alcohol.

In the United Kingdom, major manufacturers like Dyson, Rolls Royce, and Ford began producing ventilators after Matt Hancock, the health secretary, appealed on Twitter. Roche, the Swiss pharmaceutical company, has been sending coronavirus tests to the United States. There have also been financial donations from many businesses to help various relief efforts. These include paying wages, supporting smaller businesses, helping provide food, and supporting research.
