EBay Shoppers Will Soon Notice AI-based Personalization

More and more retailers are starting to incorporate artificial intelligence, including Ebay. Last June, eBay announced that it would soon be including AI-based personalization. This will allow consumers to see items based on their shopping habits and interests.

The New AI Features for Personalization

The new AI-based recommendations and personalization go beyond those found at the moment. Even those without eBay accounts will be able to see “Recently Viewed Items.” Additionally, shoppers will notice tailored sales offers, shared trending items, and even a personalized homepage. There is also a new “Trending in Your Interests” section that combines your personal interests with the current trends, so you see the trending items that align with your shopping history and general interests.

Using AI in Other Ways

EBay will also incorporate artificial intelligence and Machine Learning in other ways, including simplifying the process of finding and buying specific items. Shoppers will now be able to use an image search that uses machine learning and AI. This latest feature also allows for AI to better recognize objects, allowing browsers to shop with pictures and words via Pivot. This feature lets shoppers explore similar items, even based on an image. There is also the ability to save items they may want to buy later without placing them in the cart. Machine learning can also identify deals and coupons for users.

The features will additionally make it possible for shoppers to find items that they have bought in the past but from other merchants. Or you can just click “Buy Again” to buy from the original seller. “Buy Similar” is there for when the original seller no longer has the item for sale, or you want something similar but slightly different. The AI will even analyze your buying habits for products, so you can get timely reminders to make repeat purchases when the prices are good.

The Goal

The goal of these new features based on artificial intelligence is to improve the experience of all. The idea is to put sellers front and center, as well as the merchandise that they feel are the most relevant. EBay wants this to be the case, whether a shopper has an eBay account or is a guest shopper. The blog post announcing these AI-based elements explained that these new features focus on value, selection, inspiration, discovery, ease, and simplicity. The company’s Vice President of Buyer Experience said that these features work like a personal shopper for users.
