Many stores around the world are experimenting with stores that do not require a Checkout or have fully automated checkouts, and Sainsbury’s is joining the list. The supermarket giant has Officially Opened the very first Store in the United Kingdom that does not have a checkout.

The Remodel

To accommodate the new Sainsbury’s system that does not include a checkout, there was a remodel. The remodel involved the implementation of new technology. It also removed the areas for tills and checkouts. There was also the addition of a helpdesk to assist shoppers if they want to pay with cards or cash.

How It Works

When customers visit the Sainsbury’s convenience store located in Holborn Circus in London, they just use an application to scan as well as pay for shopping. They scan items as they walk around the store. Then when they leave, they use it to scan a QR code that confirms they paid for the items.

What Happens Next

The plan is to use this Sainsbury’s location as a pilot program, lasting three months. The goal is to experiment; Sainsbury’s is not yet sure if it will implement this as a new format. Instead, it wants to see the customer response to the application and process. Sainsbury’s will be asking customers for feedback. Based on the results, the brand will decide whether to adopt the checkout-free store process in other locations. Sainsbury’s will decide where and how to do so via the feedback.

Other Similar Examples

Sainsbury’s is not the only business to experiment with checkout-free shopping. Amazon has several Amazon Go stores without checkouts in San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago. In the Amazon Go model, customers use the app to get into the store and once there, tech detects the action of removing an item from a shelf and placing it in the cart. When customers leave, their app is scanned, and charges are reflected on their Amazon account.

Time will tell how these latest checkout-free stores do and whether they will become more widespread.
