Showing just how competitive online retail is, Walmart will be adding one-day shipping. This offering was announced in mid-May and will roll out to 40 different metropolitan areas in the next few months.

Qualifying for One-Day Shipping

Details of the announcement came via a blog post. In it, the Walmart e-commerce head, Marc Lore, indicated that this next-day shipping will be available on qualifying orders over $35. There will not be any membership fee required to take advantage of it. The list of items eligible currently includes 220,000 different products. These are all popular products and include many categories like electronics, diapers, laundry detergent, and toys.

Availability

When the rollout is complete, one-day shipping for Walmart’s e-commerce clients will be available in 40 major metropolitan areas of the United States. The rollout will begin in Las Vegas and Phoenix, soon followed by Southern California.

The Timing Shows Competition

Although Walmart says that it has been working on one-day shipping for a while, the timing of the announcement indicates an element of competitiveness. The Walmart announcement was less than three weeks following Amazon’s announcement of one-day shipping. Like Walmart’s one-day shipping, the one-day shipping on Amazon is only for eligible items.

The catch, however, is that it is part of Prime shipping, meaning that Amazon requires a paid membership to take advantage of the one-day shipping. Walmart explicitly stated that no membership or fee is necessary for its own one-day shipping.

Other Key Differences Between Walmart and Amazon’s One-Day Shipping

It is also important to note that the one-day shipping offering from Walmart is designed to complement pickup as well as same-day delivery for 1,600 stores in the U.S. That figure will be reached by the end of the year. In fact, Walmart indicated that its next-day shipping is cheaper since the items that are eligible just come from one fulfillment center. Furthermore, this is the one closest to the destination. That can help keep costs low for Walmart, allowing it to offer one-day shipping without membership.
