Warehouse Employee Theft A Growing Problem

Law enforcement recently uncovered employee theft at a Nike distribution center. Employees redirected $2 million worth of shoes to a crime ring for resale. It’s the latest example of the need for stronger warehouse security measures.

Warehouse Security Methods. Preventing items from leaving a warehouse illegally involves implementing a number of security measures. In the case of the Nike theft, employees mislabeled the cartons of shoes so the shipments would go to criminals instead of their intended location. Better software security programs may have alerted management that something was wrong.

A physical security presence and real-time security camera surveillance are also important. Employees knowing they are being watched are less likely to commit a crime. Guards are often stationed at entry/exit points to ensure everything entering and leaving is approved. They also use barcode scanners for inventory management.
