Chinese Mainland Residents Rank Higher in Well-being Than Global Average, But Global Morale at Its Lowest

In a recent study conducted by Lululemon Athletica Inc., it was found that residents of the Chinese mainland have higher well-being ratings than the global average. This surprising discovery comes as part of Lululemon’s annual Global Wellbeing Report, which aims to support individuals and communities in their efforts towards achieving well-being. The study surveyed 14,000 respondents worldwide, including 1,000 in each surveyed market from May to June 2023.

The report reveals that Chinese respondents had an average well-being rating of 78 points, significantly higher than the global average. The Global Wellbeing Index for 2023 remained consistent at 66 points, with over 67 percent of respondents prioritizing well-being. This indicates that individuals are becoming more proactive in pursuing well-being in their daily lives compared to previous years.

One of the most interesting findings of the study is the optimism expressed by respondents on the Chinese mainland. A striking 67 percent of Chinese respondents expressed optimism about the future, compared to the global average of 42 percent. This suggests that Chinese residents have a more positive outlook on life and are more hopeful about what lies ahead.

However, the study also highlighted that well-being levels vary among different groups. Males and Gen Z individuals were found to have relatively lower well-being ratings. This raises concerns about the specific challenges faced by these groups and the need for targeted strategies to improve their well-being.

The report sheds light on the preferences of individuals when it comes to engaging in physical activities for well-being. It was found that respondents prefer engaging in physical activities that feel good at the time rather than following a specific workout routine. This reflects a shift towards a more intuitive and mindful approach to physical well-being.

Furthermore, the study revealed that social sports are believed to have a greater impact on well-being than individual sports, according to 65 percent of respondents. This highlights the importance of social connections and community engagement in fostering well-being.

To further support well-being efforts, Lululemon announced the launch of the “Wellbeing for All” series of activities on World Mental Health Day. This includes the “Wellbeing Roll-out Gallery” in Shanghai, which aims to provide a space for individuals to explore various aspects of well-being. Additional well-being activities will also take place in five major cities in China throughout October.

The need for improved well-being is particularly relevant in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, almost a billion people worldwide were affected by a mental disorder. Factors such as social and economic inequalities, war, and the climate crisis contribute to degraded well-being. Unfortunately, the pandemic has only exacerbated these challenges, with depression and anxiety increasing by more than 25% in the first year.

Interestingly, a new global study shows that people’s morale has not improved despite the “return to normal” following the pandemic. This suggests that there are underlying factors that continue to impact well-being, even in a post-pandemic world. The Lululemon report aligns with this finding, revealing that global well-being has not improved since 2021, with one in three respondents reporting lower well-being than ever before.

The report highlights some of the barriers individuals face in their pursuit of well-being. Lack of time, financial resources, and mental health taboos were identified as significant obstacles to seeking help. Additionally, societal expectations negatively impact mental well-being, with individuals often feeling pressured to feign happiness and hide their struggles.

Furthermore, the study revealed that institutions are not seen as doing enough to facilitate well-being. This indicates a need for increased support and resources from organizations to promote well-being among their employees and communities.

Low well-being has both professional and personal consequences. It can lead to missed workdays and decreased commitment, affecting individuals’ overall productivity and satisfaction. Therefore, finding effective solutions to improve well-being is crucial for both individuals and society as a whole.

The Lululemon Global Wellbeing Report suggests that physical activity, setting limits, and expressing needs are some of the strategies individuals seek to improve their well-being. However, the report also highlights the need for systemic changes to address the barriers and challenges faced by individuals in their pursuit of well-being.

In response to these findings, Lululemon is committed to providing access to well-being tools through its Impact Agenda and the Centre for Social Impact. The company has also launched a Mental Wellbeing Global Advisory Board, which aims to improve mental well-being for its employees and communities.

Overall, the Lululemon Global Wellbeing Report sheds light on the state of well-being globally and highlights the specific challenges faced by different groups. While Chinese mainland residents have outperformed the global average in well-being, the report also reveals that one in three respondents reported the lowest well-being rating ever. This suggests that there is still much work to be done in improving well-being worldwide, and it is crucial for individuals, organizations, and institutions to come together to address these challenges and create a more well-being-focused society.
