ABB to Provide Power, Propulsion, and Automation for Samskip’s Hydrogen-Fueled Vessels, Boosting Global Hydrogen Buses Market

ABB secures contract for hydrogen-powered container ships, contributing to global push for sustainable transportation and boosting hydrogen buses market.

ABB, a leading technology company specializing in power, propulsion, and automation solutions, has secured a significant contract to deliver a state-of-the-art power, propulsion, and automation system for two hydrogen-powered container ships being built for Samskip Group. The vessels, set to be among the world’s first to utilize hydrogen as a fuel source, are scheduled for delivery in the third and fourth quarters of 2025. This groundbreaking project not only highlights the potential of hydrogen fuel cells as a clean and renewable energy source but also aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy.

The contract, awarded to ABB by Samskip Group, will see the company provide a comprehensive package that includes the integration of hydrogen fuel cells and the new version of ABB’s Onboard DC Grid power distribution system. Additionally, ABB’s energy storage solution control and automation technology, known as ABB Ability System 800xA, will be implemented to ensure seamless operation of the vessels. To further enhance safety and performance, ABB’s remote diagnostic systems will provide round-the-clock support for optimized functionality.

Each of the two container ships will be equipped with a 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell, supported by diesel generators as a backup power source. This combination of hydrogen fuel cell technology and traditional diesel generators will enable the vessels to operate efficiently and effectively while significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Samskip Group, an international shipping company, aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and expects each vessel to avoid approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

The project, which is co-funded by the Norwegian state enterprise ENOVA, represents a significant milestone in the shipping industry’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable practices. By showcasing the viability of hydrogen fuel cells for maritime applications, these vessels are paving the way for a greener future. The successful implementation of this project is expected to stimulate further innovation and investment in the global Hydrogen Buses Market.

Speaking about the contract, Juha Koskela, the Managing Director of ABB Marine & Ports, expressed his enthusiasm for the project and its potential impact on the industry. He stated, “This is a truly groundbreaking project that will help shape the future of shipping. By harnessing the power of hydrogen fuel cells, we can significantly reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable maritime industry. ABB is proud to be at the forefront of this innovative technology, working alongside Samskip Group to develop clean and efficient solutions that will drive environmental change.”
