House to vote on expelling Santos after damning ethics report

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on a resolution to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) after the House Ethics Committee released a scathing report on his conduct.

The report, which was released on Thursday, found “substantial evidence of potential violations of federal criminal law” by Santos, who is accused of using campaign funds for personal purposes, filing false reports with the Federal Election Commission, engaging in fraudulent business dealings, and lying about his background and experience.

The committee said it uncovered additional “uncharged and unlawful conduct” by Santos that go beyond the criminal allegations already pending against him, and would immediately refer the allegations to the Justice Department for further investigation.

The resolution to expel Santos was introduced by Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), who said Santos “placed his desire for private gain above his duty to uphold the Constitution, federal law, and ethical principles.”

“Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit,” Garcia said in a statement. “The evidence uncovered in the Ethics Committee’s Investigative Subcommittee investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment and the most appropriate punishment, is expulsion.”

Santos, who was elected in 2022 after flipping a Democratic seat, announced that he will not seek reelection in 2024, but denounced the investigation as a “disgusting politicized smear.”

“It is a disgusting politicized smear that shows the depths of how low our federal government has sunk,” Santos said in a statement.

Santos also faces a federal indictment on charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, making false statements, falsifying records, credit card fraud, aggravated identity theft, money laundering and theft of public funds.

Expelling a member of Congress requires a two-thirds majority vote in the House. Only five members have been expelled in the history of the House, three of them for supporting the Confederacy during the Civil War.
