Examination: Once the application has been filed, it will be examined by the South African Trade Marks Office to ensure that it complies with the requirements of the Trade Marks Act.


Publication: If the trademark application is accepted, it will be published in the South African Trade Marks Journal. This provides an opportunity for third parties to oppose the registration of the trademark if they believe that it infringes on their rights.


Opposition: If an opposition is filed, the matter will be referred to the Registrar for determination. If there is no opposition, or if the opposition is unsuccessful, the trademark will be registered.


Registration: Once the trademark is registered, the owner will receive a certificate of registration. The trademark will be protected for a period of ten years from the date of registration and can be renewed indefinitely for further periods of ten years.
