How Social Media Influencers Appear As Agents of Power

Social Media Influencers are a group of people that we often hear about in this era. Most of them are people who have become popular in a certain field.

Many people who have mastered the fields of art, acting, technology, science, etc. are now working as social media influencers. My aim in this article is to give a Foucauldian explanation of what they do as  social media influencers .

I was interested in the ideas of the French social philosopher Michel Foucault, so I made a special study about him. The purpose of this series of articles is to study the modern digital society through the philosophy of Michel Foucault.

A one of fundamental concept in Foucault's philosophy is "power". Power can be defined very simply. That is the energy used to accomplish a certain task. According to Foucault, power does not exist in a severely repressed society, but in a society where we accept ourselves as free.

Power does not exist in the nature of subjugation, but as a power relationship. Indeed, our life is a network of interconnected power relations. That is why it is difficult for us to get rid of power.

But it is very important to be aware of how power is used. What do these social media influencers do in social media?

Mostly they do motivations.Telling us their life experiences Or educate us through the way they mastered. For someone to be a social media influencer, he must have some social power. It is then that their listeners will accept that what he says has value.

This is a way in which personal image works as a power. In order for something to be said by an expert on a certain subject, he does not have to be a popular person. It is affected by their expertise in the field. The list of educational qualifications under his name stood for it.

It is in this case that the factor of knowledge acts as a power. What they really do is exercise power over us.

Not only that. They decide what we should buy, what our desires should be, how we should live. The best example of this is Andrew Tate.

He is a martial artist. He strongly analyzed the rise of women's role in modern society. it strongly influenced the lifestyle of men.

But he did not know that this rise of the woman is simply the current nature of the capitalist socity.

His use of this power eventually spread to anti-feminism. But as I said before, using power is not wrong. What is important is to understand that the social media influencers we often meet are agents who exert power over us. Simply put, they command us about what we should do.
