Mercury Rising: Meet the Contenders!

In a rollercoaster ride of revelations, this year’s Mercury Prize shortlist has taken centre stage, leaving the music world abuzz! The list reads like a who’s who of the British music industry, with some of the brightest stars vying for the coveted accolade.

Arctic Monkeys are in the running, alongside notable talents such as Ezra Collective, Fred Again, J Hus, and Jessie Ware, with their respective albums turning heads and capturing hearts across the UK.

Jockstrap, Lankum, Loyle Carner, Olivia Dean, Raye, Shygirl, and Young Fathers are also jostling for this prestigious prize. The race is clearly on!

Arctic Monkeys: The Heartbeat of British Rock!

Leading the pack are the Arctic Monkeys, armed with their seventh studio album, ‘The Car’. Despite frontman Alex Turner’s recent bout with acute laryngitis, the rock band staged an electrifying performance at Glastonbury this year, belting out hits from the album and revisiting their chart-topping classics. All six of their previous albums have topped the UK charts, while ‘The Car’ secured the second spot.

The Unveiling on BBC Radio 6 Music!

Tom Ravenscroft, standing in for Mary Anne Hobbs, announced the full list of nominees on BBC Radio 6 Music. Among the first to be unveiled was the Arctic Monkeys’ ‘The Car’, followed by an illustrious roster of the year’s most influential albums.

Shygirl on Her Surprising Nomination!

One standout nominee, Shygirl, appeared on Ravenscroft’s show to discuss her feelings about her debut album ‘Nymph’ being among the Mercury 2023 nominations. Caught in a wave of surprise and excitement, she admitted, “(It’s) kind of surreal… I’m like, ‘Oh, people like it? I didn’t realise, I thought I was the only one.'” Her modest response clearly belied her confidence, as she asserted, “This record is good. I’m happy with it… but it’s always nice to see how other people feel about it and how they’ve taken it in and loved it.”

The Mercury Prize 2023 has roped in an eminent panel of judges including Anna Calvi, Jamie Cullum, Jamz Supernova, Hannah Peel and Danielle Perry, with Jeff Smith, Head Of Music for BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, taking the helm as Chair.
